This used to really irritate me but now I just think it is funny. Because that it part of my Mom. And I love my Mom. I should probably be concerned because, the older I get, the more I realize that I am turning INTO my Mom but that is a whole other blog.

A classic example of this is her sending me to school in 7th grade with an excuse note that began "Danielle was absence from school yesterday..........." We caught the MARTA downtown yesterday in the early afternoon to see the craziness that is / was the final four game day.

We did not arrive with tickets in hand but - lo and behold - the more you drink the more you feel that you MUST get into the game. Go figure. We held out until game time and found a scalper errr .....fine upstanding gentleman with affordable seats. So we were able to catch what could possibly be a once in a lifetime experience. Mom has had enough of the snow and the resulting bills from the plowing service. She said that they got a few inches of snow Saturday morning. Enough to muck up the parking lot but not enough - in her opinion - to pay for another plowing. So she and Libby hopped in the car and drove around the parking lot in the Tahoe to mash it down.

This cracked me up. Mom's thinking outside the bun. And the dog is all excited to be in the car "going for a ride" but probably very confused as to why they weren't actually leaving the house.

Green - Check. This morning I had a simple plan to remedy that situation. Use the coupon on the fridge for the NTB ($12.99 - what a bargain!), be there when they open at 7am, be the first in and the first out, and be at work no later than 8am. I even called NTB last night to confirm what time they opened and that - if I was the first in - I could be done in "about 30 minutes." Yup - about 30 minutes.

So I pull up to the NTB this morning at 6:59am and the lights - in what appears to be the store -are off. The walk way wears a banner saying "WE DO OIL CHANGES." I am starting to wonder if that is true since, not only do I not see people inside, I don't see any bays into which you could pull in a car. But hey, people are late, I'm late sometimes too. That is cool. I am encouraged that I am in the right place when I start seeing other cars pull into the lot - one of which parks beside me presumably waiting for signs of life as well. So at 7:08 the lights come on inside. I enter the store and the man in charge continues doing his thing behind the counter and gives me the customer sheet to complete. I complete the information, omitting my phone number since I will be waiting on the premises for the car. He punches in my information into the computer and then points to the field I left blank and says with an attitude "uh.........phone number?" I give him the number and when I decline the super duper engine cleaning additive for an additional $4.99 he lets out a light sigh making it apparent that he believes I am making a poor decision. Since it is suddenly obvious that I was being too generous in cutting this man any slack, I tally the offenses in my head and we are standing at Strike 3.

I think to myself ...........even though it is pricey, the people at Jiffy Lube are much nicer and are actually open when they are supposed to be. And there is a coffee shop across the street from the Jiffy Lube too. Darn it - I shoulda just gone there. But I am here now and I will just deal with my choice.

Man in charge says "let's go check out your car." We walk outside together and he checks the tread depth on my tires. I appreciate the courtesy check but find it a little suspicious that all he inspects are the tires..........I guess I should not be shocked as this is National Tire and Battery. After I give him the exact mileage on the car he says nothing and I follow him back inside. He takes my key, I sign the paperwork, and at 7:25 some one retrieves my car to take it to the mystery shop to do the much needed oil change.

I sit. I sit patiently. As tempted as I was by the tattered NOV 2003 issue of Better Homes and Gardens, I chose to read my book. At 7:55am the service technician comes out to show me my dirty air filter (which they do not have in stock) and recommend a transmission flush. He is polite and I thank him for letting me know. I am silently grateful that he refrains from any scolding sighs when I don't demand that they flush the transmission immediately. At 8:05am my car is returned to the parking lot and the service technician deposits my file at the front desk which is currently unattended since the Man in Charge is out in the parking lot scoping out someone else's tires. I wait by the desk and when MIC returns he says - with aforementioned attitude in tact - "I'll be with you in a minute." While I am waiting, a new employee appears and he motions for her to cash me out. She does not say "hello," "thank you for waiting," or anything of the sort. All she says to me is "$18.50."

Thinking that Cash must certainly be the least painful way to get my ass out of this store in a quick manner I hand over $20. She steps over to another drawer and proceeds to start digging for the change but comes up with only a handful of pennies because apparently the cash drawer was never prepared. Meanwhile, MIC has finished with the other customer and directs the assistant to wait for the cash drawer. He disappears into the adjacent office and I begin to hear the plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink plink of him counting change. At this point I am so tempted to read this man the riot act about the poor experience I have had with NTB but know that will get me nowhere as this is the same person who thinks it is acceptable to 1) open late 2) belittle customers and 3) cop an attitude. I can no longer disguise my annoyance and with a tone of disbelief in my voice I say"Excuse me sir - are you counting out the drawer?" Blatantly lying, since there is no way that making $1.50 in change required so much plinking, he says "No ma'am I am making your change." The plinking stops, he reappears, places the dollar bill and two quarters in my hand. I say thank you and leave at 8:15am. Never to return.

Again - apologies for the rant. But hopefully you will find some humor in here. I bet NTB will think it hilarious........

Tips & Tunes

We had a few unanticipated successes in the kitchen over the weekend so I thought I would share some (albeit unsolicited) Moore kitchen secrets.

Add a little instant pancake mix to your scrambled eggs / omelettes and they will be a little fluffier. An added bonus IMO is that it also seems to get rid of that funky dog breath aroma that scrambled eggs sometimes have. I realize you all might be reading that last sentence thinking WTF? If you haven't already tuned out, I used one heaping tsp of Aunt Jemima Complete for 6 large eggs. I think that a server at IHOP tipped us off on this one. BTW - the County Omelette at IHOP is unbelievable. (Hash browns, Ham, Cheddar with Sour Cream on the side......)

Don't throw away that uneaten baked potato. Slice it up the next morning and saute with onions and a little butter for easy breffis 'tatoes!

Speaking of baked potatoes - here is a trick I think we learned from Randy's Mom. Poke holes in the 'tato with a fork. Microwave on high until soft to the touch (about 6 min for an average Idaho.) Wrap tightly in foil and the steam will cook it the rest of the way - wait at least 10-15 min. It stays hot for quite a while and is ready when you are. You get oven-baked fluffy without the time commitment.

Quick and Easy salad dressing that goes great with Greek Salad - found on the inside of a Feta container....3T Olive Oil, 2T Red Wine vinegar, 1/4 tsp Pepper, 1/2 tsp oregano, 1 large pressed garlic clove. Mix together all ingredients. We didn't have Red Wine Vinegar but found that Cider Vinegar worked really well.

If you hate chopping onions - get a pair of onion goggles - or I bet swim goggles work just as well if you have 'em. You will NOT be driven to tears.

When making chocolate chip cookies - or any cookies that call for softened butter - do not use melted butter. It will completely change the texture and the look of the cookie. If you don't have time to wait for it to soften on its own - use the defrost setting on your nuker and go no more then 20 seconds at a time.

and last but not least - if you have to be in the kitchen but would rather be anywhere BUT - crank up some good tunes. I downloaded the latest Shins album today and it is pretty darn good. I am really digging the song Sea Legs.

OK - enough of the Betty Crocker business.

Auntie Em! I know – there are those out there that think it is a waste to let Uncle Sam hang on to your money. I understand that view. But coming from someone who is not the best at saving, I think of it as an automatic savings plan.

Tax Return Wish list:
- Tile Back splash in Kitchen. Food/Grease spattered paint is not pretty, impossible to avoid, and even harder to clean.

- Blinds / Window treatments...... so that we can dance around like fools and not worry about being busted by the neighbors, delivery men, pedestrians, passersby etc.

- Screens for windows. Fresh air, good. Bugs, bad. Spiders, evil.
- Bleaching trays. My teeth were never white and my Diet Coke / tea / red wine habits are not helping.
- A laptop / wireless router so instead of being antisocial in the office I can be antisocial anywhere around the house.
Reasons why the Wish list might have to remain a Wish list.
- Nickel decided to drag our digital camera off the dresser by the strap. (This occurred somewhere between 4 and 5 this morning and I chose not to assess damage at that time. So maybe a miracle occurred and it is OK.)

- Denver decided to use my mouth guard as a chew toy. (I never leave it on the nightstand! Why oh WHY would I do that when we have a visiting pooch?)

- Bleaching trays and the laptop seem indulgent.

- Purchasing all of the above would taking the savings out of the aforementioned automatic savings plan

- We still don't have a mirror in our bathroom.

- Married filing Jointly means it should be Our Wish List. Not My Wish List. The good news is that we are in agreement on the back splash........the color is another story.

On a separate note......not loving the quirky spacing / bullet features of blogger tonight. But we will get to that story.

Cindy and Matt visited us this weekend. They drove down from Charlotte to deliver Winston to Kurt and Chrissy - see Flickr. Their neighbor's decided to find a home for their younger pug since it was driving their older / less energetic pug a bit crazy. Kurt and Chrissy were already considering getting a pug companion for Tony. Perfect match. We joined Kurt at Lake Claire Park yesterday for Tony and Winston's first joint dog park venture. It was great fun and Kurt and Chrissy could not be happier with the newest member of their family.

After the park we had a great lunch at the Brick Store Pub (LOVE LOVE LOVE this place) and then got ourselves 4 of the last few tickets available for the Oakhurst Wine Tasting. Long story short - the 4 of us had a great time. I suppose no further explanation is necessary but just in case: Wine+Friends+More wine= great fun + lots of laughter. After making a few new friends and offending a few strangers, we made our way home. Hurray for living within walking distance! So it is about 6:30pm and - shocker - we were hungry. For multiple reasons - none of us should have been playing with knives or near open flames - so we decided pizza was the way to go for dinner. It was determined that I was the most capable of placing said order. And - until this morning - none of us questioned that decision. Until we realized that I paid for the pizza with a credit card when I ordered it AND gave the delivery guy cash - paying for the pizza twice.

In my defense - I was thrown off guard as, when the pizza guy arrived, we were pulling out our best dance moves in the kitchen to Prince - Kiss. And since we have NOTHING on our front windows to prevent people from seeing inside our house, he got the full exposure of this ridiculous display. So I thought I was cool, chatting with the pizza guy, acknowledging what idiots we must appear to be, and he must see some pretty crazy stuff etc etc......completely failing to remember that I had already PAID for the pizza. Now the fact that the pizza guy didn't point out this fact is a whole other issue. Did he really think that I intended to give him a $40 tip? oy vey.

At this point I am questioning my decision to tell various parental/family units about this blog. If and when you (Dad, JC, Jane etc.) read this I hope that you laughed and I understand if you are shaking your head. I am too.

What a View!

After checking out the aquarium, Randy's Dad treated us to a drink at the Sundial Lounge (www.sundialrestaurant.com). This morning they got the usual tour........which included all of the EMC Houses (http://www.emchomes.com/), the Varsity (http://www.thevarsity.com/) which was too crowded to deal with, and lunch at Six Feet Under (http://www.sixfeetunderatlanta.com/). This is one of our favorite restaurants and we most always go here when we have visitors. All 5 of us had some variety of Fish Tacos which are not to be mocked unless you've tried them - so GOOD!

The first home that Randy and Kurt are building to sell on their own is moving right along. They had decided on a pale blue exterior color that went on earlier this week. Well - pale blue didn't quite work out and - applying the lesson we learned from painting our master bedroom - they decided to go with green instead. It has been too cold to repaint, however, so at this point they have a purple house on their hands. Oh well - it is only temporary and not too many can say they have owned a purple house. I took a picture today to prove it.

Speaking of pictures - having visitors gives us license to act like tourists in our own town. I took some pictures of the today's tour and plan to take plenty more tomorrow when we visit the GA Aquarium (http://www.georgiaaquarium.org/).

When we got home from the tour we had a surprise waiting on our doorstep. A yummy bouquet of chocolate covered strawberries from Randy's Mom.

I set up a page on Flickr so you can see pictures from today but am having a little trouble getting them to view correctly........I think you will get the idea though. http://www.flickr.com/photos/yelldanski/

Not everyone likes Valentine’s Day. Is it Cheesy? Yes. Commercial? Absolutely. But even in my single days – which I remember well – I never cursed this holiday. Should it take being kicked in the ass by a Hallmark holiday to tell our loved ones that we love them? Of course not. But the fact is – there are a lot of people out there who get a warm fuzzy from sending and receiving cards and flowers to friends and family. And how can that be bad? That is not to say that I can’t appreciate the anti-valentine humor. Which is why I share this link with you. http://www.meish.org/vd Credit for this link goes to my friend Mingaling. In this case friend = the author of a cool blog I found in the process of digging for reviews on my new dentist. She doesn’t know I exist. But I just might e-mail her today and wish her a Happy Valentine’s Day.

Chrissy - are you proud?

I have been reading my dear friend Chrissy's blog for a few years now. She has terrific insights and a sense of humor that I envy. Being an American living in Japan, she also has lots of adventures to share. It wasn't until recently that I began to think that I wanted my own blog. For one thing - it's one more thing to maintain. But more importantly - what about my life is so interesting that anyone but me would care? Well, perhaps not much. But even before I created this page, I have found myself thinking "this is something I would write about" or "this would make a funny post." And I think that this may be the beauty of blogging for me........forcing me to find a daily gem mixed in amongst the minutiae of the daily grind.

Confession: It has just taken me WAY too long to get through this post. I'm nervous, feeling pressure to be clever, and that is ridiculous. The only one that knows this exists is my husband and he doesn't even know the address!

OK - well before I obsess over this first post any longer I am going to sign off. But not before I say to Chrissy - Thanks! and do I have your permission to post your blog address? It's not as if the masses will be seeing this anytime soon!
